π Reference to the Context
a. What is the theme of the poem?
=> Answer: The poem reveals the devastating consequences of war and its cruelty toward human life. The death of a soldier does not end the tragedy because the people close to him are also forced to endure grief and loss. The speakerβs suffering shows that the effects of war continue in the lives of those who survive. As human life is priceless, the loss of a person cannot be truly replaced or compensated.
b. What imagery from the poem made the greatest impression on you? Why?
=> Answer: The shrapnel is the image that affects me most strongly. It gives a vivid representation of the violence of war and the destruction it causes. It is responsible for the physical destruction of the soldier, but its consequences also destroy the happiness of the woman he leaves behind. Therefore, the shrapnel represents both the loss of life and the emotional devastation suffered by the beloved.
c. Which figurative language is used in the poem? Explain with examples.
=> Answer: Figurative language allows a poet to communicate ideas through expressions that go beyond their direct literal meanings. The poem contains irony, imagery, anaphora, and apostrophe.
Irony can be seen in the notion of a βgift.β Instead of giving pleasure or happiness, the gift is associated with death and sorrow. The grave and shrapnel serve as painful reminders of remembrance, loss, and separation.
Imagery is another significant feature of the poem. The picture of roses being offered at the belovedβs grave suggests love and mourning. The husband is portrayed as a corpse with lips without a smile and eyes without sight, creating a vivid picture of death. The red roses traditionally symbolize love.
Anaphora is created through repetition at the beginning of lines or expressions. βI offer youβ is repeated in the first, third and fifth stanzas. In the sixth stanza, βyou give meβ is repeated three times in succession. The repeated phrases emphasize the contrast between what the speaker offers and what she receives.
Apostrophe is also used in the poem. It is a literary technique through which a speaker addresses an absent, dead, or non-present person as if that person were present and able to understand. The speaker applies this device by speaking directly to her deceased husband.
d. What does the speaker βofferβ in this poem? What does the person addressed as βyouβ give in return?
=> Answer: The speaker offers roses, her wedding gown, her youth, clouds, cold winters etc. to her lovable person. In return, the person addressed as βyouβ gives her the medals with shining stars, badge with yellow pips, the smell of blood from wardress, lips without a smile, arms without tenderness, eyes without sight, and body without motion.
e. An apostrophe is a literary device in which a writer or speaker addresses an absent person or an abstract idea in such a way as if it were present and can understand. Discuss the poem in relation to apostrophe.
=> Answer: An apostrophe is a literary device in which a writer or speaker addresses an absent person or an abstract idea in such a way as if it were present and can understand. In this poem, the speaker uses apostrophe by addressing her dead husband directly as though he were still present and capable of hearing her.
She speaks to him at his grave and offers him red roses and her wedding gown. His death has brought her youth to an end. His badge, bravery medals, and the blood from his dress recall the violence that caused his death and make her sorrow more intense. Her eyes are full like summer clouds, while her life has changed from spring to winter, showing how deeply the loss has affected her.
The direct conversation with her dead husband gives the speaker a way to express her love, grief, sacrifice, and respect. Thus, the use of apostrophe makes her personal suffering more powerful and highlights the bitterness of war.
π Reference Beyond the Text
a. One way to get relief from grief is to write or talk about it. In your opinion, how might the speaker in this poem have benefitted from saying what she did? Explain.
=> Answer: Grief develops when a person experiences the loss of someone deeply valued. Expressing that pain through conversation, writing, poetry, stories, or sharing experiences can help a person manage the emotional burden. The speaker in the poem uses a similar method by speaking to her dead husband.
Even though her husband cannot answer her, she can express the thoughts and emotions that remain inside her. She offers red roses and her wedding gown at his grave and reflects on the changes brought about by his death. His badge, bravery medals, and blood from his dress remind her of the war. Her eyes are full like summer clouds, while her life has changed from spring to winter.
By expressing her feelings directly, the speaker finds an emotional outlet for her suffering. She can remember her husband, reveal her love and sacrifice, and confront the painful reality of his absence. Therefore, speaking to him helps her cope with the grief created by his death.
b. Write an essay on the effects of war.
ΰ€ΰ€€ΰ₯ΰ€€ΰ€° :
War creates suffering that can spread through every part of society. Its effects may be temporary in some cases, but many consequences remain for years. Soldiers experience the dangers of combat, while civilians can suffer from death, violence, displacement, destruction, and separation from their families. Women and children are especially exposed to severe suffering during armed conflicts. In the past decade, up to two million of those killed in armed conflicts were children.
The effects of war also extend to the psychological condition of survivors. Exposure to violence and loss can produce lasting emotional and psychological stress. Present-day internal wars generally take a larger toll on civilians than state wars because combatants have increasingly made targeting civilians a strategic objective. A state conflict is an armed conflict that occurs with the use of armed force between two parties, of which one is the government of a state.
"The three problems posed by intraβstate conflict are the willingness of UN members, particularly the strongest member, to intervene; the structural ability of the UN to respond; and whether the traditional principles of peacekeeping should be applied to intraβstate conflict".
Physical destruction is another major result of war. Cities may be devastated, economic activities can decline, and countries may require many years to recover. Armed conflict has important indirect negative consequences on infrastructure, public health provision, and social order. Such consequences are sometimes overlooked because they are not always as immediately visible as deaths and physical destruction, but they can seriously affect society and national development for a long time.
