🧠 Critical Thinking

a. The Great Wall and the Taj Mahal are the creation of the autocratic rulers. Present your view for or against this statement.

ΰ€‰ΰ€€ΰ₯ΰ€€ΰ€° :

I agree with the statement that the Great Wall and the Taj Mahal can be regarded as creations of autocratic rulers. Both structures illustrate how rulers with extraordinary political authority could gather enormous amounts of labour and resources for ambitious construction projects.

The Great Wall of China was intended to protect the northern regions of the Chinese empire from enemy attacks. The text mentions nineteen walls, the earliest of which dates back to the 7th century BC. Constructing a defensive structure on such a vast scale required a workforce far beyond what individual voluntary efforts could provide.

Qin's authoritarian government had the power to mobilize people for state projects. Its system emphasized obedience and collective responsibility. Those who failed to obey could receive extremely cruel punishments, including dismemberment and beheading. People who made valuable contributions could be rewarded, while individuals considered less useful could be forced to provide labour for Shi Huangdi's major projects.

The Great Wall was not the only large undertaking associated with this ruler. The Great Wall of China, the Grand Canal, and roads were among the major projects. The roads also facilitated travel and trade. Such achievements show the extent to which an autocratic government could direct the labour of its population.

The Taj Mahal was commissioned by Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor of India. It is traditionally linked to his desire to preserve the memory of his wife, Mumtaz. According to the traditional story, the artists' hands were cut off after the monument was completed so that they could not reproduce an identical structure. Around 20,000 workers are said to have spent approximately 20 years constructing it.

These monuments are now admired primarily for their magnificence, while the workers and the hardships connected with their construction often receive less attention. Nevertheless, the scale of these projects and the authority required to organize such labour support the view that both can be considered creations of autocratic rulers.

b. How do you describe the pros and cons of feudalism?

ΰ€‰ΰ€€ΰ₯ΰ€€ΰ€° :

Feudalism was a major system of social organization in medieval Europe. Under this arrangement, nobles controlled land and offered protection to the people living under their authority. In return, those people served the nobles and had access to land. Although feudalism provided some security, it also placed serious limitations on ordinary people.

Pros of feudalism

β€’ It gave people a degree of security at a time when Western Europe faced instability after the fall of Rome and the weakening of central government.

β€’ It helped communities resist violence and defend themselves against powerful foreign enemies.

β€’ Lords had the responsibility of protecting the people who depended on them.

β€’ The system promoted qualities such as loyalty, courage, generosity, and humility.

Cons of feudalism

β€’ It created a divided society with a clear distinction between wealthy and poor groups.

β€’ People with less power became dependent upon their lords for both security and livelihood.

β€’ Powerful lords could exercise excessive authority over those below them.

β€’ Lords possessed considerable freedom to make decisions that affected the lives of their dependants.

β€’ Peasants were generally tied to their lord's land and could not freely leave it.

β€’ Their freedom of movement and many aspects of their everyday lives could be restricted without the permission of their lord.

Subject: Contributions of Prithivi Narayan Shah in the Unification of Nepal

Dear Friend,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to tell you about the important contribution of Prithivi Narayan Shah to the unification of Nepal.

Before the country was unified, the region was divided into several independent principalities, including Gorkha, Malla, Patan, and Bhadgaon. Prithivi Narayan Shah, the ruler of Gorkha, took determined steps to bring these separate territories together. His campaigns gradually overcame the divisions among the smaller states and established the foundation for a united Nepal.

His contribution should not be viewed simply as an effort to enlarge Gorkha's territory. He worked toward bringing different political units under common authority, thereby creating a stronger sense of unity and a shared political identity.

The unification of these smaller states also reduced their vulnerability to foreign attacks and possible conquest. Instead of allowing the region to remain divided into weak principalities, Prithivi Narayan Shah worked toward creating a stronger and more unified country.

His achievement was particularly significant because rulers of the time often concentrated on expanding their personal kingdoms. Prithivi Narayan Shah's campaigns, however, contributed to the joining of divided territories and the development of Nepal as a unified nation.

The effects of his work have continued to be important in Nepal's history. The process he initiated became a major foundation for the formation of the country that exists today.

From your friend,
Austin
