π Understanding the Text
Answer the following questions
a. Who is the speaker addressing and why can that person not hear or understand what she is saying?
=> Answer: The speaker is addressing her husband, who has died in the war. Since he is no longer alive, he cannot hear her voice or understand the things she is saying to him.
b. What can you infer about the speakerβs feelings for the person addressed as βyouβ?
=> Answer: The speakerβs feelings toward βyouβ are deeply rooted in love, affection, and devotion. She has dedicated the beautiful experiences and pleasures of her life to him. His death has caused her intense sorrow and emotional suffering. However, death has not weakened her attachment to him. She still hopes that they will meet again in their next life.
c. What is the speakerβs attitude toward war?
=> Answer: The speaker has a bitter attitude toward war because it has taken away her husband. Her personal tragedy has made her see war as a cruel and destructive force.
d. In what ways do you think this personβs fate has affected the speaker?
=> Answer: The man was a soldier, and his fate was to lose his life in the war. His death has completely changed the speakerβs life. The happiness she once experienced has disappeared, and she feels that her youth has also ended. As a result, she has been left helpless, loveless, lonely, and miserable.
e. What does the speaker promise at the end of the poem? Why do you think the speaker does this?
=> Answer: At the end of the poem, the speaker promises that she will meet her beloved in their next life. She wants to carry the shrapnel as evidence and show it to him as the cause of his death and their separation. She makes this promise because her love for him is extremely deep, and she wants their relationship to continue beyond death.
π Reference to the Context
a. What is the theme of the poem?
=> Answer: The poem focuses on the cruelty of war and the immense suffering it brings to human beings. War does not destroy only the life of a soldier; it also causes lasting pain to the people who love and depend on him. The death of the soldier leaves his family and dear ones to face an unbearable loss. Since human life is priceless, nothing can adequately compensate for the death of a loved one.
b. What imagery from the poem made the greatest impression on you? Why?
=> Answer: The image of the shrapnel has made the greatest impression on me. It presents the destructive power of war in a very striking way. The shrapnel physically destroys the soldier, but its effect is much wider because it also destroys the happiness of his beloved. Thus, the shrapnel becomes a symbol of both physical destruction and emotional suffering caused by war.
c. Which figurative language is used in the poem? Explain with examples.
=> Answer: Figurative language refers to expressions that communicate ideas beyond their ordinary literal meanings. The poem contains several examples of figurative language, including irony, imagery, anaphora, and apostrophe.
Irony appears in the idea of a βgiftβ because the supposed gift does not bring happiness. Instead, the grave and shrapnel represent grief, death, and separation. The contrast between the pleasant idea of a gift and its painful reality creates irony.
The poet also uses imagery to form vivid pictures in the readerβs mind. The roses placed at the belovedβs grave create an image of love and mourning. Likewise, the husband is presented as a corpse with lips without a smile and eyes without sight. The red roses traditionally symbolize love.
Anaphora is another device used in the poem. It means repeating the same word or phrase at the beginning of successive lines or expressions. The phrase βI offer youβ is repeated in the first, third and fifth stanzas. Similarly, βyou give meβ occurs three times in succession in the sixth stanza. This repetition emphasizes the emotional exchange between the speaker and her dead husband.
The poem also makes use of apostrophe. This literary technique occurs when a speaker directly addresses an absent, dead, or non-present person as though that person were present and capable of understanding. The speaker demonstrates this device by directly addressing her deceased husband.
d. What does the speaker βofferβ in this poem? What does the person addressed as βyouβ give in return?
=> Answer: The speaker offers roses, her wedding gown, her youth, clouds, cold winters etc. to her lovable person. In return, the person addressed as βyouβ gives her the medals with shining stars, badge with yellow pips, the smell of blood from wardress, lips without a smile, arms without tenderness, eyes without sight, and body without motion.
e. An apostrophe is a literary device in which a writer or speaker addresses an absent person or an abstract idea in such a way as if it were present and can understand. Discuss the poem in relation to apostrophe.
=> Answer: An apostrophe is a literary device in which a writer or speaker addresses an absent person or an abstract idea in such a way as if it were present and can understand. The poem is strongly connected with this device because the speaker talks directly to her dead husband as though he were still alive and able to listen.
She offers him red roses and her wedding gown at his grave. His death has brought her youth and happiness to an end. His badge, bravery medals, and the blood from his dress remind her of the suffering caused by the war. Her eyes are full like summer clouds, while the change in her life from spring to winter represents the sorrow and hardship that have followed his death.
By speaking directly to her dead husband, the speaker expresses her love, respect, grief, and sacrifice. The use of apostrophe therefore makes her emotional suffering more vivid and presents the bitterness of war from a deeply personal perspective.
π Reference Beyond the Text
a. One way to get relief from grief is to write or talk about it. In your opinion, how might the speaker in this poem have benefitted from saying what she did? Explain.
=> Answer: Grief is the emotional suffering caused by the loss of someone or something important. Expressing such feelings through conversation, writing, poems, stories, or personal experiences can help a person deal with emotional pain. The speaker also uses expression as a way of confronting her grief by speaking to her dead husband.
Although her husband cannot respond, talking to him allows her to release the emotions she has been carrying. She offers red roses and her wedding gown at his grave and recalls the way his death has transformed her life. His badge, bravery medals, and blood from his dress remind her of the painful circumstances surrounding his death. Her eyes are compared with summer clouds, while her life has changed from spring to winter.
Through this imagined conversation, the speaker can express her sadness, love, memories, and sacrifice. Rather than keeping her grief completely within herself, she gives those emotions a form through her words. In this way, speaking to her dead husband helps her face the loss and cope with the deep pain caused by his death.
b. Write an essay on the effects of war.
ΰ€ΰ€€ΰ₯ΰ€€ΰ€° :
War affects human life in numerous ways, and its consequences may remain for a long period after the fighting has ended. Soldiers experience the dangers of war directly, while civilians also suffer from violence, displacement, destruction, and loss. Women and children are especially vulnerable during armed conflicts. In the past decade, up to two million of those killed in armed conflicts were children.
The consequences of war are not confined to physical injuries and deaths. People who experience violence may suffer serious emotional and psychological trauma. Present-day internal wars generally take a larger toll on civilians than state wars because combatants have increasingly made targeting civilians a strategic objective. A state conflict is an armed conflict that occurs with the use of armed force between two parties, of which one is the government of a state.
"The three problems posed by intraβstate conflict are the willingness of UN members, particularly the strongest member, to intervene; the structural ability of the UN to respond; and whether the traditional principles of peacekeeping should be applied to intraβstate conflict".
War also causes widespread destruction of cities and produces long-lasting economic difficulties. A country's infrastructure may be damaged, public health services may be weakened, and social order may be disrupted. Armed conflict has important indirect negative consequences on infrastructure, public health provision, and social order. These effects are often overlooked even though they can continue to affect people and the development of a country long after the conflict has ended.
