π§ Critical Thinking
a. The Great Wall and the Taj Mahal are the creation of the autocratic rulers. Present your view for or against this statement.
ΰ€ΰ€€ΰ₯ΰ€€ΰ€° :
I agree with the statement that the Great Wall and the Taj Mahal can be regarded as creations of autocratic rulers. Their histories illustrate the immense power monarchs possessed to organize resources and compel large numbers of people to work on projects of exceptional size.
The Great Wall of China was constructed to protect the northern parts of the Chinese empire from enemy attacks. The text refers to nineteen walls, with the oldest dating back to the 7th century BC. Creating such a huge defensive system required much more than the work of a small group of individuals. A very large workforce had to be organized and controlled.
The authoritarian nature of Qin rule made this possible. People could be required to participate in projects ordered by the state. The system emphasized collective responsibility, and those who refused to obey could face extremely severe punishments. These included dismemberment and beheading. On the other hand, individuals who made significant contributions could receive rewards. Those considered less valuable could be forced to work on the major construction schemes ordered by Shi Huangdi.
The ruler's projects extended beyond the Great Wall. The Great Wall of China, Grand Canal, and roads were among the major works undertaken during this period. Roads were particularly useful for transportation and trade. These projects demonstrate how an authoritarian ruler could direct a large population toward state objectives.
The Taj Mahal also reflects the authority of an autocratic monarch. It was commissioned by Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor of India, and is traditionally associated with his wish to preserve the memory of his wife, Mumtaz. According to a traditional story, the hands of the artists were cut off so that they would not reproduce the same structure elsewhere. It is also traditionally stated that approximately 20,000 workers spent about 20 years constructing the monument.
Today, the names of the rulers connected with these monuments are widely remembered, while the hardships experienced by the workers often receive less attention. Therefore, considering the enormous control these rulers exercised over labour and resources, it is reasonable to identify both monuments as products of autocratic rule.
b. How do you describe the pros and cons of feudalism?
ΰ€ΰ€€ΰ₯ΰ€€ΰ€° :
Feudalism was a major social system in medieval Europe. In this arrangement, nobles controlled land and offered protection, while the people under their authority provided service and, when necessary, military assistance. The system had both useful aspects and serious weaknesses.
Pros of feudalism
β’ Feudalism supplied protection during a period of considerable political uncertainty following the fall of Rome and the weakening of central government in Western Europe.
β’ It helped communities defend themselves against violence and powerful outside invaders.
β’ Lords were expected to safeguard the people who lived under their authority.
β’ The feudal relationship encouraged qualities such as loyalty, bravery, generosity, and humility.
Cons of feudalism
β’ It produced a highly unequal society by creating a clear division between wealthy and poor classes.
β’ Ordinary people became dependent on powerful lords for protection as well as for their means of living.
β’ Lords possessed substantial authority and could use it excessively against people with less power.
β’ The decisions of powerful landowners could strongly influence the lives of those who depended upon them.
β’ Peasants were generally required to remain on their lord's land and could not freely move away from it.
β’ Their freedom of movement and several other areas of daily life could be restricted unless the lord gave permission.

Subject: Contributions of Prithivi Narayan Shah in the Unification of Nepal
Dear Friend,
I hope you are fine. I am writing this email to tell you about the significant contribution of Prithivi Narayan Shah in the unification of Nepal.
Before unification, the area that now forms Nepal was divided into several independent principalities, among them Gorkha, Malla, Patan, and Bhadgaon. Prithivi Narayan Shah, as the ruler of Gorkha, took determined steps to bring these separate territories under a single political authority. His military campaigns gradually overcame the divisions existing among the smaller states and prepared the ground for a united Nepal.
His contribution was much broader than simply increasing the size of Gorkha. By bringing separate territories together, he helped establish a common political identity and encouraged a stronger sense of national unity. The consolidation of these states also reduced the danger that each small principality might face from foreign attacks or conquest.
During a period when rulers could concentrate on expanding their individual kingdoms, Prithivi Narayan Shah directed his efforts toward joining divided territories and creating a stronger unified country. His work therefore represents an important stage in the formation of Nepal.
The unification process that he began had a lasting influence on the political development of the country. For this reason, his role continues to hold an important position in the history of Nepal.
From your friend,
Austin
